My Dear Fellow Grievers,
This week, I want to take a moment to talk about something that we all must face: the bittersweet dance with anniversaries and birthdays after the loss of a loved one.
For me, April 18th isn't just another date on the calendar.
It's a day forever etched in my heart, my wedding anniversary with my late wife … we would have celebrated 38 years today. It's a day filled with memories and of the beauty of the love we once shared.
The expectations surrounding such important dates can be daunting.
Do you feel pressure about what to do, how to handle it?
How do you navigate the maze of emotions that come rushing back with each passing anniversary, birthday or special occasion?
It is important to still acknowledge the day. It's okay to feel sadness, to reminisce about the happy memories, and to honor the love that still burns brightly, even in the absence of their physical presence.
Creating a plan for the day is incredibly empowering.
It directs your focus towards purposeful actions rather than drifting aimlessly in a sea of sorrow, so whether it involves savoring their favorite meal, lighting a candle in their honor, or visiting a place filled with cherished memories, having a plan ensures that you actively pay tribute to the enduring love that continues to influence your life.
There will be tears so don't forget to celebrate too.
Celebrate the love that once was and the love that still surrounds you. From your late spouse, from family, from friends, or a new partner who has joined you on your journey.
Always remember, love never dies. It lives on in the memories you cherish, the lessons you've learned, and the person you've become.
So, as you navigate the sea of emotions that come with anniversaries and birthdays, know that you're not alone.
