Navigating Joyful Occasions While Grieving

My Dear Fellow Grievers,

Tomorrow, I’m attending the wedding of a dear friend’s son—a moment of excitement and celebration for a young couple embarking on a new chapter together.

It’s a beautiful reminder of love, commitment, and hope. But for those of us navigating the ups and downs of grief, events like weddings can be a mixed bag.

While it’s heartwarming to witness love blossom, it can also stir up emotions, especially when you’ve lost a spouse or partner. You feel happy for the couple, but there could be moments when your pain resurfaces—reminders of your own loss, of the life you had, and the dreams you shared.

This is completely normal and grief often pushes its way through when we least expect it. It’s part of the process, and it doesn’t mean you’re not healing.

So, what can you do if you find yourself triggered by a joyful event like a wedding?

Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s okay to feel a mix of emotions. You can be happy for others and still miss your loved one. Give yourself permission to feel whatever comes up and mourn this milestone.

Remember to Breathe: If emotions become overwhelming, find a quiet space to pause. Take deep breaths (inhale through the nose for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale through your mouth for 8), reflect, or allow yourself to release emotions. It’s completely okay to step away for a moment and regroup.

Stay Present: Try to focus on the present joy—the happiness of the couple, the beauty of the day, and the love in the air. Let that positive energy uplift you, even if just for a little while.

Remember, everyone’s grief journey is different, and what might trigger you today might not tomorrow. But knowing how to take care of yourself during these moments is key.

Together, we can continue finding ways to honor our grief while moving forward.

Dedicated to Your Peace
