Peace In Acceptance

Thursday, February 01, 2024

My Fellow Grievers,

This week I want to talk about something I mention a lot. It’s peace … and then I’ll say the peace of acceptance.

Funny how, almost 30 years after the death of my wife I still have a bit of a hang up about “acceptance” when we’re talking about death.

I had a serious misconception about what acceptance meant when talking about the death of my wife and I believe it help me back for years!

Acceptance implies that everything is Ok and let me tell you when you’re talking about the death of your loved one “It’s Not Ok”!

Don’t confuse acceptance as being Ok or All Right with all that has happened. This is NOT the way it is!

Acceptance in grief is about accepting the reality that our loved one is physically gone and recognizing that this new reality is the permanent reality. We will never like the new reality but it is the new normal and we have learned to live with it.

We have learned to start new routines, develop new roles, to adjust and begun to live again. We understand that in enjoying life again we are NOT BETRAYING our loved one but HONORING them by living.

We make new connections and new relationships. We don’t deny our feelings now but listen to our needs and move forward. We are growing, changing, evolving.

Accepting is understanding that the love you shared will not disappear, that it is with you now and will always be, despite the separation of death.

Acceptance brings peace of heart – like the cut that has healed, the scar is there but the pain is gone.

You will never be the same but you will be happy and whole again!

Acceptance is when you can move forward turning the understanding in your head into a knowing in your heart.

When you hold your loved one in your heart with a smile and with his/her love, then there will be peace. The peace you are so desperately seeking.
